The institution is generally a teaching establishment or research institution belonging to a university or assigned to a faculty. Depending on the focus, there are cultural, artistic, scientific and economic institutes.
In addition, there are legally independent institutions and those that exist as registered associations. Among the best-known German institutes are Goethe-Institut, Robert Koch Institute, Max Planck Institute, Helmholtz Institute, Institut Fresenius and Fraunhofer Institute. There are also private companies, mostly service providers, who call themselves institutions.

The institution has several levels of meaning. First, the institution is a teaching and research institution that belongs to a university. Second, there are scientific institutes that do not belong to a university. Examples are the Robert Koch Institute, the Fraunhofer Institute, the Max Planck Institute and the Robert Koch Institute. Third, there are private companies that call themselves institutions: among other things massage institute or funeral home. Fourth, there are institutions in the financial sector, such as a bank or financial institution.
