Handball information

Handball is one of the most popular sports in Germany. In this team sport, two with each seven players compete against each other. They have the goal to throw the handball in the opponent's goal. Handball is a typical indoor sport, although there are also field handball and beach handball as variants in the open air.

Since 1928, handball is an Olympic sport. Since 1966, the Handball Bundesliga men's top division in Germany - shortly thereafter, the women's Bundesliga was founded. Here, the German handball champion is determined.

The most popular team sport Handball counts in Germany about 800.000 players, that are member in Handballclubs. There are about 4500 handball clubs in Germany, which are organized in the German Handball Federation. The Olympic sport is known in Germany mainly by the Handball Bundesliga, in which the German handball champion is determined.
THW Kiel, VfL Gummersbach and Bayer Leverkusen are among the most successful teams in handball. The German national team in handball is internationally highly regarded and also very successful.
